Nimra Khan Wins Building Community Bridges Award

Nimra Khan, a Junior majoring in Math & Computer Science, was awarded the 2022 Building Community Bridges Award for her efforts to advance diversity and inclusion at Loyola and within her home community. Nimra is a first generation college student and was one of twelve juniors and seniors from an underrepresented group awarded this honor.

In the essay which won her the award, Nimra cited three examples of her passion for diversity and inclusion work. Last March, Nimra volunteered in her home community to help schedule vaccination appointments for senior citizens and essential workers. This was during the time when vaccine distribution was difficult to manage and getting the vaccine to the most at-risk groups was vital.

Nimra also held two important positions over the summer of 2021. Nimra volunteered with Loyola University Chicago’s Girls Who Code summer bootc amp program which offers free classes for 6-12thgrade girls who are interested in learning more about coding. These classes help girls learn real-world computer coding skills and aids the larger effort of closing the gender gap in the technology field. Finally, Nimra completed a research project — under the mentorship of Math &Stats Department’s Dr. Laurie Jordan — on social justice and criminal justice reform as a part of Loyola’s First Year Research Experience (FYRE) program.
