Dr. Harrington earned a BS in applied mathematics from Brown University and a PhD in mathematics from Stanford University. Prior to joining Loyola's faculty, he was an Assistant Professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology and worked as a programmer for both the Brookhaven National Laboratory and the John Hancock Insurance Company. While on leave from Loyola, Dr. Harrington was a senior scientist at Iterated Systems in Atlanta, Georgia, where he worked on fractal image compression. Dr. Harrington currently serves as coach of Loyola's programming teams which compete annually in the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest.

Research Interests

His research interests include Python, interactive online learning, algorithms, fractals, and iterated mappings. Dr. Harrington's work on Julia sets and orthogonal polynomials has been supported by the National Science Foundation. His mathematical research has appeared in many journals, including the Journal of Approximation Theory, Communications in Mathematical Physics, the Proceedings of the AMS, and the Journal of Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems.
