Brett Coleman

Brett Russell Coleman received his PhD in Community & Prevention Research from the Department of Psychology at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2016. Prior to joining the team at CURL he held faculty positions in the Department of Psychology at Clark University and in the Woodring College of Education at Western Washington University. His research is transdisciplinary and primarily addresses the context and consequences of racial identity and racial socialization at multiple levels and life stages, including individual identity development among youth of color, whiteness and knowledge of racism as a systemic process, and the role of neoliberal ideology in youth development policy and practice. Much of his work is informed by lived experience, including over two decades working in urban youth development spaces in Chicago. His dissertation research involved the development of a youth participatory action research (YPAR) program with Black and Brown youth that focused on understanding the root causes and manifestations of community violence. More recently he has added a new line of inquiry to his work studying participatory action research as higher education pedagogy. Dr. Coleman has published research in the American Journal of Community Psychology, the Journal of Community Psychology, Social Psychological and Personality Science, Multicultural Perspectives, Nursing Inquiry, the Journal of Research on Adolescence, the Journal of Black Psychology, and Identity: An International Journal of Theory and Research.
