Registering For Your First Semester

You will register for your first semester of classes the week before you come to campus for your orientation. You will receive an email with all the information you will need to complete this process right before your Registration Week begins (please be patient!), along with details on how you can access live support via email and Zoom during that week. Below is a preview of what you can expect, with links to some videos designed to help make the process a little easier.

Step 1: You will Review course recommendations based on your major.

The First-Year Registration Guide you will receive when it’s your turn to register provides you with standard course recommendations for every major. You will review your intended major to make sure you know the classes (or options) you will enroll in for the fall semester. If you think you might want to change your major, we’ll ask you to reply to the email you receive about registration so we can help you make it official.

Step 2: Make a list of all your incoming credits (AP, IB, Dual Credit) to make sure you do not enroll in a class for which you will already have credit

Knowing your AP/IB Credits or Dual Credit will allow you to better navigate the enrollment process. It is okay if you are still waiting on some final exam scores.

Step 3: Make sure you have finalized your math and writing placements

We cannot stress this enough: one of the most critical mistakes incoming students make is neglecting to complete their Math Placement and Writing Placement Assessment before they register. This can seriously impact your first semester schedule and possibly even delay your graduation. Check your Student Portal to confirm your placement needs.

Step 4: You will log into LOCUS and enroll

  • By now you should have already completed the Technology Road Map, which showed you how to actually register for classes in LOCUS (we recommend you do this on a laptop or full-sized device; not on your phone)
  • You should register for one class at a time – don’t wait to create the perfect schedule in your Shopping Cart!
  • Follow the course recommendations based on your intended major
  • Take note of pre-professional requirements, particularly if you are pre-health (pre-med, pre-pharmacy, etc.)
  • Determine if you should take UCWR 110 this semester based on instructions that will be provided in the First Year Registration Guide
  • Determine which section of UNIV 101 you wish to take based on instructions that will be provided in the Guide.

Step 5: When you’re finished, you’ll double-check to make sure…

  • You have registered for 14-17 total credits. If any classes you selected do not align with course recommendations for your major, your schedule may be modified after your registration has closed unless you discussed your plans with us.
  • You correctly accounted for classes that may be satisfied by any AP/IB scores or Dual Credit courses you have completed (or may be on the way)
  • You remembered to register for the corresponding labs if you are in science courses (like biology or chemistry)
  • You included UNIV 101 to your schedule

Step 6: After Registration Week…

  • You will participate in your orientation experience on campus! You will get a chance to meet us there to ask any lingering questions you have from Registration Week.
  • Remember to submit your AP/IB scores or Dual Credit transcripts if they are not yet finalized. This is very important – several problems can arise if you forget! And then…
  • After your registration week, visit the schedule change website if you must make any changes to your schedule that are academically necessary – like you are changing your major, your math placement changed, or you earned qualifying AP credit for biology but you signed up for BIOL 101. Sorry, but other requests for changes cannot be honored (don’t worry – this is the one and only semester where these restrictions are placed on your schedule.)

We get it – there are a lot of steps follow, and this might feel overwhelming. Here is one more video with some important tips we think will help you navigate the registration process more easily:

Due to the volume of students we’re helping during each Registration Week over the summer, we unfortunately cannot provide 1:1 appointments or telephone support “on demand.”

However, once your Registration Week arrives, you will be provided with a link to access live support via Zoom where our Student Registration Assistants (SRAs) can help you resolve most common questions and concerns that arise when registering in LOCUS.

You will also receive a specifically-designated email address that gives you access to a team of academic advisors who will respond to any question or concerns within 24 hours – we may ask you to connect via Zoom as well if it will help yield a quicker and clearer response.
