Mission in Action

Empowerment.  My crucial goal is to empower students to want to learn. When students want to learn, they develop an increased awareness of their values and strengths, so that they will be ready to confidently enter into a professional work setting and engage with social problems. I believe that to be an effective educator, an interactive and collaborative setting promotes critical thinking and problem solving skills. To create this interactive learning environment, I encourage students to ask questions and give their views on the material covered at each class period. I solicit feedback from their colleagues first, in order to empower the students to assist each other before I present the formal answer, if further clarification is needed. My focus on ethics in my classroom helps prepare students with skills and tools for sound ethical decision making for complex issues they will face in every social work field of practice they may join. Small group discussions allow students to be actively involved in examine their own beliefs, which empowers the student to match the six ethical principles and core values of the NASW: service, social justice, dignity and worth of a person, integrity, importance of human relationships, and competence.
