Energy-week

Energy Week at Loyola

Loyola's Office of Sustainability will hold its annual energy week from October 14 through 18. The week of events focuses on the university's commitment to green energy and energy conservation. Students, faculty, and staff can participate in the events below or find more sustainability-focused events here.

Energy Week 2024

Energy Week events highlight energy efficiency and renewable energy.

Damen Cinema Showing

In honor of Indigenous Peoples' Day, the Office of Sustainability team will host a movie night in the Damen Cinema on October 14. The screening starts at 7 p.m., after Loyola's Indigenous People's Day event, which includes a panel discussion and Indigenous food tasting (4 p.m., Sister Jean Multipurpose Room, Damen Student Center). The Energy Week film, "The Warrior Tradition," tells stories of Native Americans who have served in the U.S. military.

Get to Know Your Energy

Students can learn more about their impact on energy use throughout the week. The Office of Sustainability team will set up tables at the Damen Student Center on the Lakeshore Campus on Wednesday, October 16 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. and in the Schreiber building on the Water Tower Campuses on Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The team will have trivia questions about conserving energy within your apartments and homes. Students can learn what they can do to lower their energy bills and defeat the "energy vampires" lurking in their homes.

Students, faculty, and staff can also visit the tables to learn about e-waste. The World Health Organization estimated that the United States generated 62 million tons of e-waste in 2022. Stop by to discover how to recycle electronics responsibly and contribute to Loyola's Zero-Waste program.

SES Seminar: The Shift to Renewable Energy in Illinois

On Wednesday, October 16, the School of Environmental Sustainability (SES) will hold a seminar examining the policies and processes behind the transition to renewable energy in Illinois. Anthony Star and Kelly Turner from the Illinois Power Agency (IPA) will shed light on how the state manages electricity procurement, and how the state is increasingly moving toward electricity generated from renewable sources such as wind and solar. There will be refreshments in the SES atrium from 3:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., and the presentation starts at 4 p.m. in SES room 124.

Net Impact Networking

Lastly, one of the newest sustainability clubs on campus will host a Networking 101 event on October 16, at 6 p.m. in Palm Court in the Mundelein Center. The event will help students understand networking and how to practice it, especially with professionals within the climate jobs network. The club also hopes to help students get a jump start on internship applications in SES and outside the school.
