Scholarships
A scholarship is a form of gift assistance that does not need to be repaid. Loyola awards need-based and merit scholarships on a competitive basis. The following academic scholarship opportunities are available through the School of Environmental Sustainability.
Rachel Carson Scholarship
The Rachel Carson Scholarship provides the opportunity for students to study nature through summer coursework at Loyola’s Retreat and Ecology Campus (LUREC). LUREC is Loyola’s ecological campus located 50 miles northeast of Chicago, on almost 100 acres of wetland, forest, prairies, and ponds, including a three-acre organic student farm. Courses offered at LUREC include Field Ornithology, Herpetology, Principles of Ecology, Restoration Ecology, Agroecosystems, and Sustainable Agriculture.
Students accepted to Loyola are eligible to apply for the Rachel Carson Scholarship in the spring prior to starting at Loyola the following fall.
Each year, four $2,500 per year, four-year scholarships are awarded. Awardees must take a three-week course during the early summer session twice while at Loyola. One J-term class at LUREC may substitute for a summer course. Recipients are also required to serve as ambassadors for LUREC with their peers. Tuition and fees for LUREC classes must be paid from these funds, which are added to the student’s account at the beginning of each of their eight regular semesters. Prospective candidates must be admitted to Loyola prior to February 1. The Rachel Carson Scholarship application is due March 1. If you have questions about this award, please contact the Undergraduate Admission Office at 800-262-2373 or admission@luc.edu.
