Mosaic Magazine

Mosaic Magazine

The social justice magazine of the School of Communication at Loyola University Chicago

Loyola’s School of Communication encourages students to be involved with their surrounding community and issues surrounding social justice. Mosaic began as a project in the fall COMM 315 Advance Reporting course taught by John Slania in 2003, and the first magazine was published in the spring of 2004. In the spring of 2012 the design of Mosaic became the responsibility of the COMM 328 Magazine Design and Publishing course taught by Jessica Brown. Since then, both courses, along with photo journalism students, have worked together to produce the Magazine.

Our Current Issue

Food and water are life. Access to clean water and healthy, affordable food are essential to our existence. In this edition of Mosaic Magazine, our multimedia journalism students explore food and water-related issues across the spectrum. Readers will find profiles of local restaurants working to be greener and pay workers a living wage. There are trend stories that interrogate the reliance of expiration dates and how an app can help consumers reduce food waste. Our featured story begins on page 32 and takes us on a tour of the Terrance J. O’Brien Water Reclamation Plant, which is a wastewater management facility that serves the city of Chicago and 125 areas of Cook County. Because we all have experience with food and water, we also have opinions about them. Our writers share their thoughts on eating disorders, vacant lots as community gardens, water bottles and more.

At the end of the magazine readers will find a special section called “Traditions.” Here our reporters add a personal touch to the topic of food and water by sharing some of the favorite recipes and food traditions they share with family and friends.  From savory to sweet you’ll end your journey through this issue with meals and treats to take home to your loved ones.

We want to thank all the members of the Loyola University Chicago community who supported this year’s magazine, and all the people who invited us into their homes and workplaces to tell their stories.

Eat. Drink. And be Merry.

Sincerely,

Jessica Brown and John Slania
