Madonna della Strada Chapel

Madonna della Strada Chapel is Loyola University Chicago's main chapel. Unlike diocesan parishes, Madonna della Strada Chapel is operated and maintained by the University, and it functions as an apostolic outreach of the Jesuits on campus, serving a diverse and transient congregation. Like all other Catholic churches, the chapel must adhere to guidelines and policies for Roman Catholic spaces of worship and liturgical celebrations, which are are promulgated by the Archdiocese of Chicago. In addition to liturgy, Madonna della Strada Chapel serves an educational purpose, giving students the opportunity to learn more about the liturgy and train to be liturgical ministers.

On May 13, 2021, Cardinal Blase Cupich appointed Fr. Richard Salmi, S.J., to be University Chaplain of Loyola University Chicago as well as Rector of Madonna della Strada Chapel for the duration of his assignment to Loyola University Chicago. Fr. Salmi’s jurisdiction extends only to members of Loyola University Chicago: officers of the administration, academic faculty, undergraduate and graduate students, resident employees. He will also oversee the marriages celebrated in the chapel. The Most Reverend Mark A. Bartosic, Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago, installed Fr. Salmi as University Chaplain during Mass at Madonna della Strada at 10:30 a.m. on August 15, 2021, the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Madonna della Strada Chapel is generally open seven days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The University reserves the right to secure the building without notice in cases of staff shortages or for security concerns.
