Steve McCurry: ICONS

October 27th, 2023 - March 27th, 2024

“Steve McCurry: Icons” at the Loyola University Museum of Art

From October 2023 through March 27, 2024, visitors to Loyola University Museum of Art were immersed in “Steve McCurry: Icons,” an exhibition that celebrated the renowned photographer’s extraordinary global vision. Featuring more than 80 large-scale prints, the show invited us to reflect on the richness and diversity of human culture through McCurry’s lens.

As WTTW described, “It’s a striking blend of art, journalism and storytelling.” McCurry’s images—some instantly recognizable, such as the iconic “Afghan Girl”—highlight both the shared humanity and the distinct individuality found across continents and cultures. Throughout his long and celebrated career, McCurry has emphasized trust and empathy when photographing his subjects. “You come in with humility and respect,” he said, “and let them know you want to tell their story.”

Though this engaging and thought-provoking exhibition has come to a close, its impact lingers on. It reminded us of the power of photography to foster connections and deepen our understanding of the human experience.
