John is a 2018 graduate of the BA Management program.

Paying It Forward

John's decision to return to school as an adult stemmed from a desire to address a gap in his educational background, driven by both personal and professional motivations. Despite having initially started at Loyola in the 1980s, life took him on a different path, leading to a career in financial services. However, with the evolving demands of his profession and the need for further qualifications, John recognized the importance of completing his undergraduate degree.

His connection to Loyola runs deep, having attended a Jesuit high school and appreciating the values and educational philosophy instilled by the Jesuit tradition. This familiarity and affinity with Loyola's ethos influenced his decision to return to complete his education there. Additionally, the convenience and appeal of SCPS, with its focus on adult learners and flexible learning options, made it a natural choice for John. The proximity to the neighborhood he knew well and the opportunity to pursue his studies in a familiar environment were significant factors in his decision-making process.

John's educational journey didn't stop at the completion of his bachelor's degree. He seized the pathway that SCPS provided to graduate school, embarking on a master's program at Loyola's Quinlan School of Business. His specialization in business data analytics aligned with his professional interests and allowed him to deepen his expertise in his field. Despite facing personal challenges such as health issues and the loss of his wife, John persevered, demonstrating remarkable resilience and a refusal to let obstacles deter him from his educational goals.

"If you're truly committed to completing school, no matter what life throws at you, you will be able to overcome. That doesn't mean you're going to do it alone. You may have to ask for help. I've gotten a lot of help from my fellow students and support from the faculty. That's why I was able to do that in spite of those difficulties. So stick with it. It's worthwhile."

As an ambassador for SCPS, John recognizes the support and assistance he received from others throughout his life and believes in the importance of extending that support to students. John emphasizes the integral role that Loyola's community played in his academic achievements. The Ignatian values of service, compassion, and resilience permeate the university's culture, fostering a supportive environment where students like John can thrive in the face of challenges.

"I believe you need to give back. I was given much help throughout my life by people, and I believe the more life gives us, the more we need to give back. I firmly believe in that."
