Our Services

The Tutoring Center provides academic and learning support for undergraduate Loyola University Chicago students.

Supplemental Instruction (SI)

Supplemental Instruction (SI) consists of regularly scheduled, out-of-class group study sessions driven by students’ needs. Sessions are facilitated by trained peer leaders (SI Leaders) who utilize collaborative activities to ensure peer-to-peer interaction in small groups (UMKC 2018). SI is offered for historically difficult 100 and 200 level courses in biology, chemistry, math, and physics courses.

Small Group Tutoring

Peer tutoring is offered in some 100 and 200-level courses in study groups of 3- 8 students led by an undergrad peer tutor. This is achieved through a collaborative approach. Students who are in need of academic support in higher level classes may contact August Winters, Coordinator of Peer Tutoring, at cwinters3@luc.edu. Although tutoring is not guaranteed, the Tutoring Center makes every effort to accommodate tutoring requests.

Success Coaching

In a free, personalized, one-on-one Success Coach meeting, students will meet to talk about their academic experiences, identify areas for growth, and create a customized, realistic plan for success.  For example, students may choose to work on study skills, time management, notetaking, stress management, exam preparation, or other learning strategies. Success Coaches are highly trained, friendly, and knowledgeable graduate students who can help students identify opportunities to take academic success to the next level.

UNIV 112: Strategies for Learning

This one-credit, semester-long course helps students assess their academic skills and become strong, effective learners in college. During the semester, each student will work with the instructor and a Success Coach to develop learning strategies such as test preparation, notetaking, study skills, and final exam preparation. Students will have the opportunity to reflect on their academic experiences and create a plan for success.
