Undergraduate Essay Award in Philosophy:

To enter the competition, students may submit papers written for a philosophy class during the academic year. The deadline for submissions is usually the beginning of April. First prize receives $300, second prize $200.

Outstanding Junior and Senior Philosophy Major Awards:

Each year, the Department of Philosophy identifies one outstanding junior and one outstanding senior philosophy major. Students will be honored during the annual awards ceremony.

MAP-SPLW Essay Contest:

The MAP-SPLW Essay Contest is an undergraduate competition which solicits submissions pertaining to Social-Political, Legal or Contemporary issues in Philosophy. The best essays are judged by a panel of faculty and graduate organizers affiliated with Loyola University Chicago's Minorities and Philosophy (MAP) chapter and with the Social, Political, and Legal Workshop (SPLW) research group. The first of these contests was held in 2023, with the top three essays winning cash prizes.

 

John Grant Award in Health Equity:

Each fall semester two applicants are selected who demonstrate outstanding commitment to and research in health equity. Each receipient receives $2000.

John Grant Award for Outstanding Junior and Senior Studying Bioethics:

Each spring semester one junior and one senior student is selected who demonstrate outstanding achievement in bioethics, including academic achievement and excellence in research and extracurricular commitments in bioethics. Each recipient receives $3000.

John Grant Fellowships for Research in Bioethics:

Each academic year 3 students are selected for research fellowships in bioethics. These fellowships are awarded to undergraduate students who propose a research plan to work with a faculty member on a project of their choosing that relates to health care, bioethics, human health and the environment, human or animal research, biotechnologies, or any other bioethics-related topic. Applications are due each spring by March 1st for the following academic year. Applications are submitted through the Center for Engaged Learning, Teaching, and Service (CELTS) website. Each recipient receives $2000 plus a $500 research budget. 

John Grant Essay Contest:

Each spring semester students are invited to submit an essay relating to a topic in bioethics and papers are selected for a first place ($500) and second place ($250) award. A call for submissions comes out in March of each academic year.
