An important part of any learner’s life is growing–growing in scholarship, growing in community, and growing in collegiality.

Loyola University Chicago offers a wide variety of organizations that allow students to flourish throughout their academic careers. One of the most prestigious and honorable organizations that select Loyola students have the opportunity to join is Alpha Sigma Nu, the honor society of Jesuit institutions of higher education. Founded in 1915, Alpha Sigma Nu seeks to identify the most promising students in Jesuit schools who distinguish themselves in scholarship, loyalty, and service.

The Loyola Chapter of Alpha Sigma Nu 2023 Induction Ceremony was held Sunday, October 1.

Mayra Garcia Sainz is one of the highly accomplished School of Education students who was inducted into the organization this year. “[The] Alpha Sigma Nu induction is a meaningful achievement that highlights my dedication to academic excellence, service, and ethical leadership,” Garcia Sainz says. “It’s a personal milestone that encourages me to continue striving for these values in all aspects of my life.”

Each year, Alpha Sigma Nu acknowledges and encourages scholarship, loyalty, and service by recognizing an honorary inductee. Dr. Markeda Newell was recognized as this year’s recipient. Dr. Newell has her BS in Elementary Education and went on to obtain her MS and PhD in Educational Psychology. Since then, she has focused her research development, implementation, and evaluation of multicultural and consultation competence among school psychologists. Currently, she serves as Loyola’s Vice Provost and Interim Dean of the School of Education. 

The School of Education is incredibly proud of all its students who have earned membership in Alpha Sigma Nu, signifying their impressive academic achievements and commitment to scholarship, loyalty, and service. Now, go forth and set the world on fire.
