Associate Dean Jim Faught to retire after 44 years of dedicated service

Associate Dean for Administration Jim Faught (JD ‘76) is retiring from the School of Law after 44 years of dedicated service. His last day will be Friday, January 27, 2023. 

Dean Faught joined the law school administration as an assistant dean in 1979 and earned a reputation as an outstanding listener who is deeply invested in students’ success. In 1991, he was promoted to associate dean for student affairs, and in 2003, he was promoted again to associate dean for administration, a role he has held for 20 years. Dean Faught managed the overall operation of the School of Law as well as numerous duties related to pre-law advising, recruitment, admissions, registration, alumni relations, student conduct and activities, academic and non-academic counseling, and staff management. He also served as administrator of the law school’s extern program from 1980 to 2010.  

One of Faught’s premier accomplishments is the establishment of the School of Law’s popular London Comparative Advocacy Program, which began in 1988. Each December, Loyola law students immerse themselves in London’s legal profession, accompanied by Dean Faught, members of the Loyola faculty, and distinguished guests. Faught will continue to be involved with the London program. 

In addition to serving on numerous University committees throughout his career, Faught served on many state committees, including the Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA) Standing Committee on Legal Education, Admission and Competence; the ISBA Committee on Liaison with the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission; and the Lawyers’ Assistance Program of Illinois, where he served as president in 2009-10. In 2004, he was appointed to the Illinois Executive Ethics Commission and served for 14 years. Dean Faught has been recognized with numerous awards for his distinguished service, including the School of Law’s St. Robert Bellarmine Award and St. Thomas More/Francis J. Rooney Award. 

“I’m grateful to Dean Faught not only for his tireless service to the law community over the past four decades, I’m also grateful for his boundless generosity, great humor, and unwavering grace under pressure,” said School of Law Dean Michèle Alexandre. “Jim has left an indelible mark on our community, and he will be sorely missed.”
